For centuries tourism had been the pursuit of only the wealthiest people. Only in the 1840s did it start to become available to a wider range of customers because of the rapid development of the railways. Subsequent spurts of rapid growth in tourism were closely linked with revolutionary changes in transportation. Contemporary tourism is based on road and air transport, but these modes are almost entirely dependent on fuels which are based on refined crude oil. Thus, in the face of global peak oil, the transport and tourism sector are facing serious challenges and inevitable changes. In this paper the author presents an analysis of crude oil supply, the current usage in the transport sector and an oil demand forecast for the future. In addition, alternative energy sources in transport are presented as well as the possibilities for their implementation. The author also tries to address the question of how rising oil prices and future oil shortages will influence the tourism sector.
