Distributed Power Management and Control for Local Government Infrastructure Using GICOMP

As the notion of Green Computing is becoming more popular in the IT world, so new power saving features are starting to appear in both computer hardware and software. The difficulty of leveraging the existing means of power management and control increases with the scale of the operations, making a networked approach to the problem a necessity. In this paper we present the GICOMP system architecture, a distributed solution for the monitoring and management of power consumption in computer systems. We discuss its features and characteristics, and explain what makes it suitable for a broad range of power saving and management applications. We present an example of its deployment and potential socioeconomic gains which this system could provide for other local governments.
