The use of biomass is perceived as a way to transition from energy based on fossil fuels to renewable energy. However, the cultivation of energy crops requires large areas, which are currently being used by food manufacturers. The popularity and development of biomass production raises the question whether there is enough land to provide both adequate supplies of food and energy. In this paper it is examined whether Poland has enough arable land to satisfy the national demand for electric power by burning biomass from willow (Salix viminalis). There is also a discussion of the economic impact, which in the context of competitiveness of energy production in this way, can bring prospects for long-term profitability of investing in this sector on a massive scale.
