Abstract

3D virtual worlds are successfully used in vocational and business training courses in many countries. Here, we focus on the so-called serious virtual worlds, as opposed to game-worlds. The paper discusses some issues relating to training in the largest such world nowadays - Second Life. The article consists of four main parts. First, a short introduction to 3D virtual worlds is provided, as they are scantily investigated and researched in Poland and in Polish literature. The second part presents a general discussion on the functionality of virtual worlds in vocational and business training courses, and especially regarding those features of virtual environments that influence their functionality. The third part is devoted to the academic uses of virtual worlds. This contains several examples of universities that conduct academic vocational and business courses which make use of virtual worlds, as well as some examples of scientific conferences organized within Second Life. The fourth part presents some examples of research projects to evaluate the effectiveness of vocational and business training courses in 3D serious virtual worlds as well as the functionality of these environments.
