The Development of Metropolitan Areas in the World and Poland

There is increasing interest amongst economists in mesoeconomic research, in particular, research on regions. A special type is the metropolitan region (area), which contains the central city and its surrounding territorial units. In those regions there exists an accumulation of human capital, material capital and financial capital which can provide for its rapid development. The main objective of this article is to analyze the development of metropolitan areas in the world and Poland and also to explain the existing differences. The article defines terms related to urban development and describes the process of metropolisation in world space as well as the development of metropolitan areas in Poland. The next step is to compare the level and dynamics of the development of metropolitan areas in the world and in Poland throughout selected years. The article quantifies the research problem and the processing of source material is based on logical analysis.
