Effect of women’s empowerment on domestic violence in Chad based on DHS-MICS data, 2014-2015

Purpose : This article looks at the effect of women's empowerment on domestic violence in Chad.
Design/methodology/approach: The binary probit model is used to analyse the effect of empowerment in its various dimensions as well as globally. The analyses were based on data from demographic health surveys and multiple indicator surveys collected by INSEED in 2014-2015.
Findings: The analysis shows that women's empowerment has a positive impact on domestic violence in Chad. A woman who expresses her disagreement with violence, participates in the decision-making process within the household, and has economic autonomy and social independence, has 4.01% and 10.4% more chances of experiencing domestic violence respectively for a medium and high level of autonomy compared with a low level of autonomy. Awareness-raising must therefore be stepped up if the process of empowering women is to benefit Chadian society.
Originality/value: Empowerment plays a substantial role in women's achievement but very few studies have focused on Chad. The study makes a significant contribution to the literature through this first empirical attempt to understand the effect of women's empowerment on domestic violence in Chad by taking into account various dimensions of empowerment. It breaks down domestic violence into several forms and adopts the quartile approach by grouping factors by dimension in order to establish the level of women's empowerment before their links with the different forms of domestic violence.
