Abstract

Objective – This article aims to analyze the causes of immigration in French Guiana, examine related public policies, and evaluate the reception and support measures for migrants. It also seeks to highlight the disparities in the effectiveness of these measures between the national level and the local reality in French Guiana.

Design/methodology/approach – A descriptive analysis combined with statistical tests, such as the Chi-square (χ²), was conducted to examine the relationships between various economic and social variables related to migrants. This method enables an assessment of the impact of support measures on the integration of migrants in French Guiana.

Findings – The results indicate that while the support measures implemented by the state are generally effective at the national level, they do not fully meet the specific needs of migrants in French Guiana. There is a misalignment between national policies and local realities, hindering the integration of migrants into the economic and social fabric of French Guiana.

Originality/value – This study offers a unique perspective on the challenges of immigration in French Guiana, often overlooked in national analyses. It underscores the necessity of adapting immigration policies and reception measures to local specificities to improve migrant integration. The article thus suggests ideas to enhance the alignment of public policies with the particularities of French Guiana.
