Abstract

Purpose: This article aims to assess the effects of climate change on food security in Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA), and within the economic integration zones (ECOWAS, ECCAS, SADC).

Design/methodology/approach: The AMG model is used for this purpose since it takes into account long-term dynamics, with the MG and CCEMG estimators on panel data for 30 SSA countries covering the period 1990–2023.

Findings: The results show that temperature and precipitation have respectively significant negative and positive effects on the availability and accessibility of food, but not on food utilization in SSA in the long term. Analysis by integration zone reveals that the adverse effects of temperature on availability are greater in SADC than in ECCAS and ECOWAS. On the other hand, the beneficial effects of rainfall on availability are more notable in ECCAS than in ECOWAS and SADC. The harmful effects of temperature and the beneficial effects on accessibility are greater in the ECCAS zone than in the ECOWAS and SADC zones.

Originality/value: The originality of this work lies in showing the disparity that exists between the different economic integration zones. The article suggested that authorities must put in place appropriate methods of adaptation to climate change to improve food security.
