The aim of the paper is to describe the strength and the character of present trade linkages within the European Union, particularly as far as the ten new members are concerned. The empirical results of the study allow to conclude that bilateral trade flows within the EU are determined by normal gravitational forces with a statistically significant "new member" bias. Export and import flows of the new members are still underdeveloped in comparison to the EU-15 countries, though their industry structure and intra-industry character resemble that of the EU-15.
